Cross Point Chronicle | August 2026

Pastor's Note

A Summer to Remember

There's an old truth about a garden in late summer: the harvest doesn't show up all at once. It's the result of a hundred small, faithful acts nobody saw — a seed pressed into the ground back in the cold, a row hoed in the heat of July, water carried when the rain didn't come. By August, all anybody sees is the tomatoes on the vine. But the real story was in the faithfulness that got you there.

That's exactly what I've watched happen at Cross Point this year.

32 Children, Every Weekend
Here's a number I want you to sit with: 32 children were fed, every single weekend, throughout the entire 2025–2026 school year. Not once in a while. Not when it was convenient. Every weekend, food went home with a child who needed it, because this church decided that no kid in our reach should wonder where their next meal is coming from.

That's not a program. That's a promise kept 30-some times over, by volunteers who packed bags, by folks who gave quietly, by a church that decided love shows up in grocery sacks as much as in sermons. If you had any part in that — you helped plant something that fed a child's body and told them somebody cares. Well done.

End of Summer Bash — August 19
Before the school buses start rolling, let's go out with a celebration. Mark your calendar for the End of Summer Bash on August 19. Bring the kids, bring the neighbors, bring whoever needs a good time before the calendar gets busy again. This is Cross Point at its best — Love, Connect, Equip, lived out in one afternoon of fun before we send our children back into their classrooms.

A Prayer for the Ones Who Carry Our Children
Every August, I think about the folks who are about to take on one of the heaviest, least-thanked jobs there is: loving other people's children for six or seven hours a day.

I want to ask our whole church to spend this month praying — by name if you know them — for:
  • Administrators, who carry the weight of every decision and every crisis before the rest of us even hear about it
  • Teachers, who will pour themselves out in front of a room of children starting soon, often with far less than they need
  • Staff, the cooks, the aides, the office folks, the custodians — the ones who keep the whole thing running
  • Bus drivers, who load up precious cargo every morning and evening and get them home safe
  • Every other person whose hands and hearts shape our children's days
These are the folks standing in the gap for our kids when we can't be there. Let's stand in the gap for them in prayer.

Your Faithfulness Matters
I say this every year, but it bears repeating: what you give and do through these last weeks of summer is not small. It's the seed that becomes the harvest we'll see all year long — in a child fed, a teacher encouraged, a family who found their way to Cross Point because someone showed up for them first.

I am prouder of this church than words can carry, and it remains the honor of my life to be your pastor.

Love,
Pastor Vondie and Lori

Men's Ministry

BOW Fall Community Outreach Events

Hello Cross Point family, we hope your summer has been filled with great days spent with family and friends. Your Men’s Ministry team has been working on a community outreach event for this fall. On September 13th we will host a Men’s Chili cookoff after both services. The winner will represent Cross Point’s Brothers of the Way men’s ministry at Chili Night in uptown Beckley. We will have a booth set up to connect with our community.

On September 13th we will have tables set up in the Gym for you to bring your crockpots where our congregation will receive voting cards for a donation of any size to sponsor this event. Each voting card will be placed in a sealed box, and we will announce the winner during both services on Friend Day September 20th.  The team will work with the winner in our church kitchen getting everything ready for Beckley Chili Night on October 3rd.

We also invite any guys to join us at Chili Night to hand out connection cards and interact with those in attendance that night. Some of the best evangelism is one on one conversations with those we encounter in the marketplace. A sign up sheet will be posted at the welcome center starting on August 2nd. Please get your name the list so we can plan accordingly.

Please continue to join us in prayer for the Lord’s will to be carried out thru our church into our community bringing, hope, encouragement, and salvation. Thank you again for you prayers and support as we continue to follow our Lord’s command to go and make disciples.

Brothers of the Way

Young at Heart Celebrates America's 250th in Style

The Young at Heart small group kicked off America's 250th birthday celebration with a patriotic gathering full of red, white, and blue spirit — and, of course, a slice of apple pie to top it all off! It was a sweet reminder of just how much fun fellowship and celebration can be when good friends come together.

If you're a senior looking for a warm, welcoming group to connect with, Young at Heart meets every Wednesday at 2:00 PM in Room 107. Come join the fun — you never know what they'll be celebrating next!

The Book of Second Peter
Location: Wednesdays at 6:30 PM in the Lobby
Description: How Do We Resist False Teaching? Can we trust Scripture? Why is God taking so long to set everything right? What should Christians focus on in the meantime? Confusion about how and why God acts the way he does has always troubled the church. That’s why the apostle Peter warned the early church about patterns of false teaching that could lure people away from trusting in God.

In this six-session series through 2 Peter, author and pastor Kyle Idleman will show that regardless of the century, culture, or innovation, we can be confident that God will ultimately accomplish his purposes. As we wait for Jesus to return in judgment and glory, we must make every effort to become more like him in everything we do.

Cross Point 101
Location: Wednesdays at 6:30 PM in Room 106
Description: If you’ve been through Starting Point and you’re ready to sink your roots deeper into the Cross Point family, this is your next step. You’ll discover our overall vision and mission--the “why” behind everything we do. We’ll walk through our methods of operation, you’ll get to know our staff beyond Sunday mornings and hear the rich history that has shaped Cross Point into the church family you see today.

How to Study the Bible
Location: Wednesdays at 6:30 PM in Room 107
Description: This class will equip you to study the Bible with clarity and confidence by teaching you how to understand context, use helpful study tools, and approach Scripture the way it was meant to be read. Together we’ll build practical skills that help you read God’s Word accurately, deeply, and with growing joy.

Young at Heart
Wednesdays @ 2:00 PM in Room 107
Facilitators: Vondie Cook Sr. & Dana Hosch
Description: A special time just for our seniors!

Women's Ministry

Women's Book Club | August 18 at 10:30 AM

The Cross Point Church’s Women’s Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 18, at 10:30 A.M. in the church conference room.  The book club discussion will focus on the book “Long Way Home” by Lynn Austin. Lynn Austin is a bestselling author of nearly thirty novels and is an inductee into the Christy Award Hall of Fame (organization which recognizes creativity and quality in writing and publishing Christian fiction). The book focuses on a young woman’s search for the truth after her childhood friend returns from World War II drastically changed and requires treatment in a mental health facility. The author examines the effect of what we now know as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) had on a young man when he returned from World War II.  All women are invited to join book club gathering as we discuss this interesting book.

Starting Point — August 30

Have you been attending Cross Point but haven't quite found your footing yet? Starting Point is for you.

It's not a class or a commitment — just a lunch with good food and honest conversation, built for anyone who's been showing up on Sundays and wondering if there's more here for them.

Join us Sunday, August 30 at 12:30 PM in Room 107. We'll talk through who Cross Point is, what we believe, and where you might fit in. You'll meet our staff and connect with others just getting started. Childcare is provided, and there's zero pressure — just an invitation to the table.

Baptism Service — August 30

Have you made the decision but haven't yet taken the step? Our next Baptism Service is Sunday, August 30 during the 11:00 AM service — and it might be time.

Baptism doesn't save you; Jesus already did that. But it is one of the most meaningful acts of obedience a believer can take — a public declaration, in front of your church family, that you belong to Him.

If you've been waiting, let this be your moment.

Youth Ministry

Save Your Cans for Youth!

Here's an easy way to support our youth ministry—save your aluminum cans and bring them to church! Simply drop your cans in the recycling trash cans located in the gym by the carpet ball table. Every can makes a difference, and we're grateful for your support of our students!

Thank you for helping our youth!
