Called Friends

Sep 27, 2026  •  Pastor Vondie Cook

What if the most powerful relationship available to us requires nothing from us to begin? This message takes us deep into the heart of John 15, where Jesus redefines what it means to be connected to God. The central revelation is both simple and staggering: friendship with God was not something we earned or negotiated. It was purchased at the cross before we ever thought to ask for it. The image of John F. Kennedy's young son slipping beneath the Resolute Desk captures something profound about how God sees us. While world leaders and generals waited for appointments, that child simply asked, 'Where is my dad?' That is the access Jesus has opened to every one of us. We are not staff hired to keep things running. We are not servants waiting for instructions. We are chosen members of a family, invited to pull up a chair at a table that was set for us long before we arrived. The cross is not a transaction that demands our worthiness. It is the open door held wide by nail-scarred hands, and all we are asked to do is walk through it.
