When Fear Drives Our Choices

Oct 11, 2026  •  Pastor Rob Ringwald

What happens when we receive a clear promise from God but let fear talk us out of trusting it? That is the central tension running through this message drawn from 1 Kings 11 and 12. We are walked through the rise and fall of Jeroboam, a man who checked every box of a gifted leader -- a valiant warrior, a capable manager, a man chosen by God through a prophet to receive ten of the twelve tribes of Israel. Yet despite that divine promise, Jeroboam allowed fear and self-interest to drive him toward building false altars rather than trusting the God who had already secured his future. The key spiritual lesson here is both sobering and freeing: giftedness alone does not lead to success. What ultimately determines the trajectory of our lives is not our talent or our connections or our resume -- it is the posture of our heart toward God. Jeroboam's story is a mirror held up to our own tendencies to grab control when God's timeline does not match ours, to build our own solutions when we doubt God's ability to sustain what He has promised. The passage in 1 Kings 11 echoes a refrain heard throughout the Old Testament -- that obedience and trust in God lead to blessing and an enduring legacy. We are invited to ask ourselves honestly: where is fear quietly steering our decisions right now?
