When God Answers by Fire

Aug 16, 2026    Pastor Vondie Cook

What does it look like when God's power confronts a divided heart? In this message drawn from the dramatic account of Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, we are brought face to face with one of the most spectacular moments in all of Scripture -- and with one of the most uncomfortable questions we will ever encounter. The people of Israel had been limping between two opinions for far too long, unwilling to fully commit to the God who had carried them through generations of history. Elijah's challenge to the crowd was not gentle or diplomatic. It was direct: choose. And the silence that answered him is a silence many of us know well from our own lives. We may never bow before a carved idol, but we understand what it means to post one set of values publicly while living another privately, or to let compromise quietly split our loyalty until we wake up one day serving two masters. The fire that fell on Mount Carmel was not a spectacle designed to impress -- it was a call to repentance. And the response it produced was not applause or excitement, but people falling on their faces and declaring that the Lord, He is God. That is the fire still being offered to us today, not a moment of theatrical wonder, but a genuine turning of the heart back to the One who has always been worthy of our full devotion.
